The Purpose of the Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee
The Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee (MBE Input Committee) is a group of certified minority business enterprise representatives.  The MBE Input Committee works in conjunction with the President, staff and Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council (Rocky Mountain MSDC) to provide advice and input regarding the programs and projects implemented by the Rocky Mountain MSDC so that those programs and projects are relevant and supportive of minority business development, consistent with the 501c(3) tax exempt status of the Rocky Mountain MSDC.

The MBEIC currently has two standing committees.  They are the Contracts Committee and the Communications and Outreach Committee.
Other committees are formed on an as needed basis.

Events Committee Formed:
The newly formed Rocky Mountain MSDC Events Committee met on December 10, 2009.  Co-Chairpersons of the Events Committee will be Laurie Billeter of Denver Water and Tami Young of Adven-Tech. The committee will be responsible for three major events of the Rocky Mountain MSDC: Growth Through Partnership, the Golf Tournament and the Business Opportunity Fair.

                            I.
The purpose of the Contracts Committeeis to facilitate mutually beneficial contractual relationships between certified MBEs and corporate members of the Council.  On July 22, the Contracts Committee met to identify and update their goals.  They are as follows:

1)  Complete work on a database matrix that captures information supplied to the Council regarding corporations, MBEs, current and potential customers to identify contract, RFP's, and other growth opportunities;
2)  Work to ensure that the Access Opportunity Meetings have key decision makers from "hosting" corporation.  Develop guidelines for the meetings to allow great participation and produce end results;
3)  Identify MBEs (per industry or service group) who will be attending Access Opportunity meetings;
4)  Utilize the MBE Communique to identify potential contract opportunities;
5)  Distribute and include Capability Statement document to MBEs during the recertification, reciprocal or new certification process.  The Capability Statement is available on on-line and can be easily updated accordingly.

You can contact Kenneth Robbins,
Contracts Committee Co-Chair, at 720.963.4343.

                              II.

The purpose of the Communications and Outreach Committee is to develop, recommend and help implement strategies, programs, professional development workshops and seminars, MBE Survey, monthly MBE Communique and procedures to maintain effective communications with the Council's MBEs and corporate members.

The committee is responsible for developing strategies to increase MBE certification and participation in the Council. New members to the committee are:  Lily Poon (AdvenTech); Andra Hargrave (Global Sales Advisors); Ron Hunter (TypeEtc); Kathryn Rae (Design to Market); Ellsworth Grant (EnviroFriendly Printing).  Belinda Hooks is the Editor of InTouch ezine, a monthly publication that is produced by the Communications Committee.  Kathryn Rae is the Managing Editor.

We started the new year off by recognizing two long-time stalwart RMMSDC champions, Jim Sato and Larry Duran on January 7, 2010 at Cilantro Fusion Restaurant in downtown Denver.

Over 40 persons assembled to honor Jim and Larry for their many years of groundbreaking work within the Rocky Mountain MSDC.  Les Townsend paid a moving tribute to Larry Duran, while Joseph Serna spoke eloquently about Jim Sato as a leader, mentor and friend.

Both Jim and Larry will continue to be involved with the Rocky Mountain MSDC as they contribute expert tips to new MBEs from their years of experience in establishing and nurturing successful Minority Business Enterprises.

The Rocky Mountain MSDC also celebrated the many opportunities in 2010 by continuing our American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ("ARRA") seminars:

ARRA Workshop, Part 2
January 20, 2010:  Come Meet the Primes!
Location:  National Renewable Energy Laboratory
(including Denver Housing Authority, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Colorado Department of Transportation, DPR Construction, Inc., and RTD)

Nancy Gardner of NREL led the seminar's activities by describing current and upcoming opportunities and socioeconomic commitments for MBEs who wish to work with NREL.  Stan Sena, President & CEO of the Rocky Mountain MSDC, and Mike Mora, Business Development Specialist, US Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency, introduced a series of 8 presenters from various prime contractors and agencies, including:  Colorado Department of Transportation, Denver Housing Authority, NREL, RTD, DPR Construction, Hensel-Phelps Construction, and Moltz Construction.  Each speaker described the optimum way to find and apply for opportunities with their respective agencies.

2010 Activities and Seminars Recap
Denver, Colorado - May 14, 2010
We are nearly six months into 2010 - it's time to reflect
and take note of the successes we have had at the Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council (Rocky Mountain MSDC).

As you know, we started the year under new leadership with Stan Sena taking the helm as President and CEO of the Rocky Mountain MSDC.  Stan's history as an MBE combined with his long-time commitment to the MBEIC and Board Member signaled a high level of dedication to minority businesses.   His vision and commitment to aligning the Rocky Mountain MSDC, Board and the MBEIC has positioned our collective body to rebuild and reestablish our brand in the marketplace.

We have had tremendous support from Board Members, MBEIC leadership and MBE volunteers to assist the Events Committee in its mandate to increase both the quality and quantity of program and networking activities. The changes are noticeable:
•   2010 Growth Through Partnership conference was a resounding success as we achieved a 25% increase in revenues and 24% increase in attendance.  In addition, participant feedback was the highest we had received in a number of years.
•   Workshops offered during the first quarter varied in content and style, but always with a presentation point of view to educate and inspire minority business owners.
•   We re-instituted the "New MBE Orientation" providing critical information for new MBE's to "Get Connected - Be Connected - Stay Connected" with the Rocky Mountain MSDC.
•   We added an abundance of MBEs to include reciprocals.
•   We also added many new Corporate Members
•   The new monthly social networking event at Cilantro Fusion is allowing us to interact with other MBEs, Corporate Members and prospective members in a social setting.  We had over 30 in attendance at our first event, and the numbers continue to grow.
•   We have scheduled our Access Opportunity Meetings through most of the year - with more in the pipeline.
The Rocky Mountain MSDC is embarking upon a mission to be recognized as the place to go to for MBE's to seek assistance, guidance, training, education, networking and contracting opportunities.

Unless you are connected and part of the Rocky Mountain MSDC's network, it will be difficult to navigate through a process that will allow you to leverage strategic sourcing opportunities, business relationships and MBE-to-MBE agreements.

I encourage you to "Stay Connected"   - Support the Rocky Mountain MSDC  - Be a catalyst for change in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Utah for minority business development and supplier diversity.
